Natural or Wildlife Garden Ponds
Thursday, 16 May 2013 4:37 pm
Even a small garden pond is an important addition to your garden and the environment in general. A well-cared for pond is a real hotspots for freshwater wildlife and having a pond is one of the best ways that you can quickly help establish wildlife in your own back garden.

The more natural you make a garden pond the better the wildlife will like it. In general simply keeping the water really clean and making natural edges will let wildlife colonise naturally.

If the conditions are right your garden pond will quickly attract a wide variety of wildlife including dragonflies, pond skaters, damselflies, water beetles and frogs, maybe even newts. For the really patient, water snails will colonise your garden ponds naturally - even though they can’t fly!

For practical advice simply speak to Mark and his staff in our World of Water Aquatics department or surf down to: World of Water or the RHS

Ponds and aquatic life fascinate young children!
Therefore it is important to make the area safe, whilst enjoyable.

Here are some simple ideas to help:

  • Always supervise children around water.
  • Position the pond in a part of the garden where access can be restricted and where it is highly visible to adults.
  • A raised pond will create a natural barrier.
  • Use a fence to protect the pond.
  • Use wide shallow planting areas; this will allow easy escape should a child fall in.
  • Visiting children are often at higher risk, as they may be unaware of the potential danger.
  • Always have electrical items professionally fitted using a trip switch (RCD).
  • Ensure pool edging is secure.

Remember accidents are very rare,
so enjoy your pond while being aware of safety!
