Get out in the garden - and take the kids!
Friday, 26 Apr 2013 6:41 pm
With the hope of some sunshine at last why not get out in the garden with the kids? What better way to get out in the fresh air and get good and mucky!!
The RHS Flower Show in Cardiff (the first big show of the year), was full of ways to get the family outside, you could have tried fossil hunting, make a bee hotel, tree climbing, or get gardening with Blue Peter's Chris Collins - there was plenty for the family at this year's show.

Why not have a go at these fun activities at home too:
Hold a sunflower-growing competition between your kids and their friends! Choose big tall fast growing varieties like 'Russian Giant' and plant seeds straight in the ground in a sunny area - remember big is good!
Send the kids on earthworm hunts then let them build a wormery with a large jar filled with layers of soil and sand so they can watch the fascinating underground life. Click here for getting started instructions (or simply search Google for “wormery”).
Organise a (supervised) night safari with a torch and a notebook. Look out for the likes of moths, beetles, voles, and hedgehogs and other garden wildlife which becomes more active after dark, you may even spot the odd urban fox.

Keep a pet dandelion:

Dig up a dandelion, plant it in a pot and watch it grow flowers and seed clocks. This will encourage children to follow the cycle of bud to seed in detail. It should also teach them how to take care of potted plants. (And it’s one less dandelion in your lawn!) Click here for details.

Sowing seeds is not only popular but educational and rewarding as well! Choosing larger seeds like courgettes, cosmos and marigolds make things easier for little fingers. Watch the fascination on little faces as plants grow.
Make a seed tray garden with squares of turf for lawns and lolly stick fences. You'll be amazed by the imagination the kids show when trying to create miniature plants, trees, buildings and people! Click here for hints and tips!
