Spring is Coming!
Wednesday, 6 Mar 2013 1:25 pm
Spring is on its way and should arrive around mid-March hopefully increasing the number of sunny (or at least dry) days allowing us to get back out on to the garden in earnest!

Now is the time to get busy preparing the vegetable seed beds and sowing the seed, cutting back winter shrubs and generally tidying up around the garden.

Top 10 jobs this month
  1. Plant those gorgeous summer-flowering bulbs - they're available now.
  2. Get the compost heap going again. If you have a compost heap that has been ignored all winter, stir it up and add some fresh compost or manure to get it going again. If you've not got a heap then start one with the rubbish and debris from your spring garden clean up.
  3. Lift and divide overgrown perennials to bring new life and fill those borders.
  4. Top dress existing pots and containers with fresh compost to give the plants the nutrients they need to start the growing season.
  5. Open greenhouse or conservatory vents and doors on warm days.
  6. Clean up the lawn mower and be prepared to mow the lawn on dry days (keep it on the long side for now!)
  7. Plant early potatoes, onion set and shallots now to give them a head start as the ground warms up.
  8. Weeds are no longer dormant and begin springing into life - now is the time to deal with them before they get out of hand.
  9. Use an acid type rhododendron fertiliser to feed conifers, broad leaf evergreens, Camellias, Rhododendrons and Azaleas.
  10. Start feeding fish a wheat germ based spring and autumn food (which is easily digested) and using the pond fountain. It should be safe to remove pond heaters now.

RadishOne more thing....

Get the kids involved in the garden - I'll never forget my dad giving me my first packet of radish seeds. I grew a few in an old flowerpot and was seriously proud when I took my first radish in to show my mum! I seem to remember having something like sausage, chips and RADISH for lunch that day...
