Late winter jobs around the garden
Thursday, 17 Jan 2013 5:06 pm

Although the weather is cold, there are many jobs you can do in the garden, including feeding wild birds, cleaning pots or tools, digging, choosing seeds, planning and generally prepare for the coming spring.

Fruit and Vegetables:

  • Cover areas of soil with cloches to warm it for early sowings of broad beans, carrots, peas and parsnips outside in the soil that's been warmed.
  • Finish pruning fruit trees and soft fruits, cut the stems of late fruiting raspberries to ground level.
  • Spread a little sulphate of potash fertiliser around flowering shrubs and fruit for a spring boost.
  • Chit seed potatoes by standing them in trays in a light, frost-free position. (For those unaware “chiting” is starting the germination process in seed potatoes above ground).
  • Plant Jerusalem artichokes to act as a windbreak on exposed plots of ground.

In the flower garden:

  • Deadhead winter-flowering bedding plants, removing any damaged leaves at the same time
  • Prune winter jasmine to cut back flowered shoots and cut down the tallest stems of buddleia, to low-growing emerging shoots
  • Transplant shrubs and divide and replant congested herbaceous perennials during this dormant period.
  • Plant lily of the valley

Around the greenhouse

  • Plant early summer bulbs late in the month
  • Ensure frost-free conditions by installing a thermostatically controlled heater
  • Bring any spring bulbs planted in pots into the greenhouse so as to encourage flowering
  • Sow summer bedding plants
  • In heated propagators you should be able to sow tomatoes, aubergines, onions, celery and peppers

Everything else

  • Knock any snow off shrubs or conifers to prevent the weight causing damage to branches
  • Firm the soil around plants that may have been lifted by frost or wind action.
  • Clean, sharpen and generally maintain tools
