January in the Garden
Wednesday, 2 Jan 2013 1:30 pm

In January, your garden and plants need protecting from frosts, high winds and heavy rain or snow. Check stakes and plant ties, fleeces and other supports for damage and consider moving more tender plants to sunnier positions for maximum light. Don't forget to keep feeding wild birds as food is scarce for them during winter.

Top 10 jobs this month

  • Waterlogged pots are at risk from frost damage at this time of year, especially terracotta pots or other porous pots. Stand such pots onto feet or blocks so that the pot is raised allowing good air circulation. This helps keep vulnerable parts of the pot dry, improving drainage and preventing the pot from being damaged by cold.

  • Don't let the ice damage your pond, a concrete pond can crack due to pressure from ice. Keep your pond free of ice by fitting an electric pond heater or float a large ball on the surface to create a patch of ice free water. This will also protect fish, which can be killed by trapped gas released from decaying pond plants.

  • Keep your garden as pretty as possible by dead-heading blooms, like winter cyclamen, and by removing dead leaves and branches. Clear snow from low-growing flowers, such as crocus, so the colour can be seen.

  • Tender plants need protection: Plants like Cordylines and Fuchsia should be protected from frost, so bring them into the green house or a conservatory.

  • Brush heavy snow off trees: brush shrubs and conifers with a broom to prevent damage to branches.

  • Inspect stored tubers of Dahlia, Begonia and similar for rot or drying out.

  • Plan your vegetable crop rotation areas for the coming season.

  • Dig over any vacant areas or plots that have not been dug already, especially in the vegetable garden.

  • Recycle your Christmas tree by shredding it for mulch.

  • Keep putting out food and water for hungry birds. (Water is important!)
