November in the Garden
Sunday, 18 Nov 2012 1:43 pm
The last of the leaves are now falling, and wind and rain are increasing. It may be unseasonably mild at the moment but temperatures can soon plummet. Tender plants need protection from the frost, biting winds and freezing rains. Move your more susceptible plants into a greenhouse, or sheltered spot. If this isn’t possible then it is worth wrapping plants or pots in situ with fleece (available in store) or even bubble wrap.

Also remember winter can be a tough time for birds and wildlife in the garden so keep supplies of food and especially water well topped up. Birds need high energy (high fat) foods during cold winter weather to maintain fat reserves and survive the frosty nights. Use only good quality food and scraps.

Ten jobs for November:

Clean up fallen leaves from lawns, ponds and beds
Clean up and service your mower and other garden tools
Raise any container plant onto feet to minimise water logging
November is an ideal time to take hardwood cuttings
Plant final tulip bulbs for a spring display in the New Year
Prune roses back to prevent wind-rock
Plant out winter bedding pansies, primroses and violas
Cover brassicas with netting if birds (especially pigeons) are a problem
Lift and store dahlia tubers in sawdust or peat (keep them in the dark and dry but not completely dry and away from frost)
Put out high fat bird food to encourage winter birds (and the odd squirrel or hedgehog) into the garden
